Work at Other Institutions

Current students who plan to take courses at other institutions must have written pre-approval from the Elon University Registrar. The request to transfer credit form is available on the Office of the Registrar‘s website. Students are encouraged to consult with their academic advisors to review their academic planning prior to submitting the request to transfer credit form. It is the student's responsibility to secure approval from Elon's Registrar before they register for the course at the other institution in order to assure credit will transfer.

To be considered for possible transfer credit to Elon courses must be taken at an institution accredited by one of the following regional agencies to award associate or bachelor degrees: Middle States Commission on Higher Education; New England Association of Schools and Colleges - Commission on Institutions of Higher Education; North Central Association of Colleges and Schools - The Higher Learning Commission; Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; Southern Association of Colleges and Schools - Commission on Colleges; Western Association of Schools and Colleges - Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges; Western Association of Schools and Colleges - Senior Colleges and University Commission.

Courses are evaluated on an individual basis based on their content compared to the Elon requirement to be satisfied.  Students may be directed to the appropriate academic department chair as needed for final transfer credit evaluation.

An upper level (3000/4000 course number) requirement at Elon cannot be satisfied by a lower level (1st or 2nd year) course from another school.

A grade of “C” or higher must be posted on the official transcript for each course in order for the credit hours in that course to transfer. Courses posted in an un-graded format, including but not limited to pass/fail, audit, or credit/no-credit, will not transfer. Grades do not transfer, only the credit hours will be posted to the Elon University transcript with no change to the Elon grade point average. A grade of “T” for transfer is used to indicate transcript credit accepted.

Credit hours will not transfer for a course in which the student has already earned semester hours of credit at Elon. Students cannot transfer courses in which they have incurred an honor code “F” at Elon University.

Students transferring approved courses worth fewer than 4 semester hours of credit must still meet the total semester hours required in the progress audit category to which the transferred course is applied.

In addition to meeting all other graduation requirements students must: 1) earn a minimum of 132 total semester hours, 2) take a minimum of 60 total semester hours at Elon University and, 3) take a minimum of 50% of the credits required for the major at Elon.  The following degree requirements must be taken at Elon:  The Advancing Equity Requirement (AER), the Core Integrative Capstone Seminar and, the capstone course in the major.
