The Honor System

Every member of Elon University has the right to live and learn in an atmosphere of respect and support. The Elon University Honor System presents the expectations of the university that individuals will act in a manner that is respectful of the rights and privileges of others.

Responsibility for maintaining the honor of the community rests with each individual member. Only if every member assumes responsibility for personal and group integrity and civility will the community best meet the developmental needs of its members. Each person must examine, evaluate and regulate their own behavior to be consistent with the expectations of the Elon community.

The Elon Honor System includes the Honor Code, the Code of Conduct (composed of Academic Integrity policies, Social policies, and the Title IX and Sexual Misconduct Policy), and adjudication processes. All undergraduate and graduate students are governed by the Elon University honor system, except as outlined within the Elon School of Law Student Handbook for law students and graduate program student handbooks.

Those prohibited behaviors and processes associated with sexual harassment, interpersonal violence, sexual misconduct, and sex and/or gender-based discrimination are administered under the authority of the university’s Director of HR Compliance, Equal Opportunity and Title IX and govern all students, including all undergraduate students, graduate students, and law students. Those prohibited behaviors and processes may be found in the Title IX and Sexual Misconduct Policy at: http://elon.smartcatalogiq.com/current/Student-handbook/Title-IX-and-Sexual-Misconduct-Policy. Violations of the Title IX and Sexual Misconduct Policy are violations of the Code of Conduct. Students are responsible for knowing the information, policies and procedures outlined in this document and the Student Handbook. Elon University reserves the right to make changes to this code as necessary and once those changes are posted online, they are in effect. Students will be notified via campus email of any changes during the academic year but are encouraged to visit the online student handbook for the updated versions of all policies and procedures: http://elon.smartcatalogiq.com/current/Student-Handbook.
