Periclean Scholars
Director: Professor Arcaro
Periclean Scholars are part of Project Pericles, a national project dedicated to increasing civic engagement and social responsibility. They are dedicated to promoting awareness of global issues and to helping provide solutions to the problems surrounding these issues in culturally sensitive and sustainable ways. Students apply to become Periclean Scholars in the second semester of their first year. Each class of students chooses an issue to address during their sophomore year and then spends the next three years engaged in activities that integrate academic reading, research and writing with service and outcome-oriented experiential learning activities. All Periclean Scholars classes operate as seminars, with heavy emphasis on student ownership and leadership in most aspects of the class. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. These classes are only open students accepted into the Periclean Scholars program.
