HST 313 MODERN AFRICA

This course explores developments since the late nineteenth century that have influenced contemporary Africa. We will examine African responses to European imperialism, the struggles for independence and democracy, and the challenges facing new African states. The major focus of the course will be on regions south of the Sahara. Students will learn about African perspectives and geography as well as the transformations that have taken place in everyday African lives. A research paper will offer the student an opportunity to learn more about a specific African topic as well the historian's craft.
