Forensic Support for Survivors of Sexual Violence

If a survivor is interested in pressing legal charges for sexual assault, hospital personnel are prepared to conduct a standardized medical exam known as a "sexual assault forensic exam” or a SAFE exam if the assault occurred within the last 120 hours (5 days). There is no statute of limitation for reporting sexual violence and charges may be filed without completing a sexual assault forensic exam.

This exam collects relevant evidence and records important observations. IMPORTANT: To collect the best evidence the survivor must not shower, change clothes or use the bathroom before receiving the rape protocol exam. The cost of the exam is covered by special government state funds set aside for crime survivors. A Confidential Responder (336-278-3333) can accompany a survivor to the hospital at any time.
