Spanish A.B.

A major in Spanish requires that students complete the following trajectory. Students must move forward after completing the requirements at a given level.

Spanish majors are required to study abroad for at least one semester in a program that has been approved by the university and the department. The study abroad semester may be completed at any point in the above trajectory and includes the following requirements. Additional credits from abroad may be applied to general studies requirements, another major, or a minor as appropriate, or used as elective credit for graduation.

A Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Spanish requires the completion of the Elon Core Curriculum as well as the Major Requirements listed below.

Study Abroad Preparation and Reflection: 4 sh

WLC 301, WLC 302, WLC 303: This is a three-part course to prepare for and reflect upon the study abroad experience with a faculty mentor and cohort of other students studying abroad.

Study Abroad Electives: 8-12 sh

A maximum of 3 courses (12 sh) taught in Spanish can be counted from the semester study abroad. Courses must be pre-approved by the Spanish section and the Registrar.

An internship in Spanish is strongly encouraged, and up to 4 sh of internship credit can count as elective credit for the Spanish major. Internship must have pre-approval and a faculty mentor on campus.

Total Credit Hours: 40-44

Major in Spanish with Teacher Licensure:

A major in Spanish with Teacher Licensure, K-12, requires the above 44 semester hours plus 40 semester hours of professional studies courses in education and psychology. 

Students pursuing licensure to teach Spanish are required to take:

Experiential Learning Requirement (2 Units required)

Included in experiential learning are study abroad, research, service-learning, leadership, internships, (including co-ops, teaching, and practicum), or other courses or experiences with ELR designation.

World Language Requirement

Students must meet one of the following: (a)complete a language course numbered 122 or higher at Elon, or receive transfer or study abroad credit for the same; (b) place into a language course numbered 200 or above upon arriving at Elon, using a department of world languages approved placement instrument; (c) score a 4 or 5 on an AP language exam or similar exam. Each student must take the language placement test by October 1 of his or her first full year at Elon. Students are allowed two tries; the higher score is counted. That score stands and may not be repeated by later testing. Consideration for Phi Beta Kappa membership requires the completion of a 222-level world language course or placement beyond that level.

Studies in the Arts and Sciences

Students must fulfill the requirements in each of the following categories.

Transfer students with at least 18 s.h. of transfer credit must complete 32 hours total in Studies in the Arts & Sciences, but may have as few as 7 hours in one or more of the four Studies in the Arts & Sciences areas.
