COR 418 NEW YORK CITY: LIVING IN THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY
To call New York City a microcosm of the global community is no exaggeration. The city is home to an estimated 800 languages, diplomatic missions from 193 nations, and 2.9 million foreign-born residents. New York’s challenges mirror those of the global community, as well. Rising income inequality, immigration, complex public health issues, and vulnerability in the face of climate change complicate New York City’s future. Understanding New York City, then, helps us understand out world. This course uses New York City as a microcosm to model and understand the diversity and complexity of global humanity, as this humanity attempts to live in a global culture. We will explore the diversity of values that New Yorkers hold and examine important social, political and religious issues at play throughout the city, in order to analyze how these ideas can help us better understand our global community. Enrollment is by application and there are additional costs for housing.
