Railway Regulations and Safety

Elon University and The NC Railroad Commission are working to increase awareness about safety regulations and railroad properties.  Below are a few critical points to remember:

—  Anyone walking on railroad tracks or in the corridor should move. They can be cited for trespassing.

—     Pedestrians and motorists should look both ways before crossing a track; pedestrians and motorists should never cross if the gates are down.

—     Tracks should only be crossed at designated locations. Again, crossing the tracks at any ppint other than a designated crossing may be considered trespassing.

When using the railroad pedestrian tunnel STOP before you step into the street; only cross at the designated crosswalks when you have stopped and checked to make sure it is safe it is safe.

—Motorists should always stop when crossing gates are down and/or lights are flashing.  If a crossing is not signalized, stop, look, and listen before proceeding through the crossing.

Quieter train  technology may make it more difficult to hear an approaching train. Always remain alert and do not walk near or cross railways distracted- including using technology (earphones, phones, tablets, etc.)
