COR 461 GOOD DEATH: CULTURES FOR LIVING

Death is a reality that we often avoid. But is there another way?  This course will examine beliefs and attitudes toward death, the process of dying, and practices of disposition and mourning.  Students in this course will confront, examine, and share their own perceptions of death; listen deeply to alternate perspectives; plan for their own good deaths; and consult research in ways cultures make death meaningful and good. Significantly, students will create a capstone project for a real audience that frames their learning in this course and their liberal arts engagement.  Morbidity is banished!  We expect to grasp the reality of death and thus appreciate the meaning of life. (This is not a course for those who have experienced recent and close losses and are actively grieving.  Your work is of a different kind and character.)
