SPN 343 BEYOND GOOGLE TRANSLATE: SPANISH TRANSLATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY
This course is designed to introduce students to translation and its relationship to pragmatics, the use of language based on the social and cultural norms that dictate our everyday interactions. Topics will include false cognates, metaphorical language, and the importance of maintaining the tone and register of the original text in the translation. Through a discussion of the problems inherent in the translation process and through translation practice, students will come to understand why human translators can accomplish what automatic translation programs cannot.
