ENG 257 LITERARY LANDSCAPES OF ENGLAND
This course, which involves a significant amount of reading and writing, explores the world of English literature, language, culture, and history. Students will examine England through the centuries and learn how culture and history have shaped English literature—from the days of the Anglo-Saxons to the modern, multicultural 21st century. Site visits to places of major artistic and historic importance around England as well as many sites in London will give students an opportunity to examine how famous authors like Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, Wordsworth, Dickens, Orwell, Woolf, Zadie Smith and many others have used English history, culture, and language to bring their works to life. While most of the course time will be spent in London, day trips to Canterbury, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford, Bath, and Stonehenge are planned.
