MUS 361 PERCUSSION METHODS

The purpose of this course is to prepare prospective music teachers for successful teaching in a school instrumental program or private studio. Students will develop basic proficiency on selected percussion instruments and the appropriate teaching techniques and strategies for teaching those instruments. In addition, they will demonstrate knowledge of the materials for effective teaching in the middle and high school instrumental program.

  1. 1. To learn to play at a basic level the major instruments in each family of instruments (Percussion and Strings)
    2. To learn to teach the basics of these instruments in the middle and high schools and in the studio
    3. To learn the appropriate materials and band literature for the upper grade elementary, middle and high school instrumental ensembles (grades 5-12)
    4. Demonstrate the proper care, maintenance and tuning of each instrument studied
