NRS 320 Family-Centered Nursing Care for Infants, Children & Adolescents

This course will explore the essential elements of nursing care across the family-centered healthcare continuum including care for infants, children and adolescents. Emphasis is placed on the concepts of development, physiological, psychological cultural and spiritual care of the child within the family unit. Students will also explore the concepts of family, health-wellness-illness, communication, caring interventions, management of care, safety, quality improvement, informatics/technology and advocacy.

  1. 1. Perform head to toe and focused assessments of the infant, pediatric and adolescent client.
  2. 2. Demonstrate satisfactory competence in clinical skills per the NRS 320 Clinical Evaluation Tool.
  3. 3. Identify needs of clients and families within this population and apply components of the nursing process to develop a plan of care to meet those needs.
  4. 4. Detect changes including those related to the disruption of growth and development within the internal and external environment of clients across the family healthcare continuum.
  5. 5. Communicate effectively with individuals, support persons and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  6. 6. Correlate diagnostic test and procedures across the health-wellness-illness continuum.
  7. 7. Incorporate informatics and technology to formulate evidenced-based clinical judgements and decisions.
  8. 8. Understand the processes of clinical reasoning and applications in nursing practice.
  9. 9. Implement caring interventions incorporating documented best practices for individuals in diverse family health settings.
  10. 10. Develop teaching plans that reflect appropriate developmental stage and age of the client.
  11. 11. Provide safe, culturally competent therapeutic care to infants, children, adolescents and their families.
