Odyssey Scholars Programs

There are a number of need-based scholarships for incoming first-year students. Specific criteria must be met in order to receive one of these scholarships. Each of the scholarships listed below is housed within the Odyssey Scholars Programs. Students complete one application and are considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible. For consideration, students must submit the Odyssey Scholars Program application and recommendation form to the office of Admissions by January 10. The Leon and Lorraine Watson North Carolina Scholarship

The Leon and Lorraine Watson North Carolina Scholarship program awards eight scholarships with a guaranteed total grant award of $30,000 annually to North Carolina students who have promising academic records and high financial need. Other scholarships and grants may be added and will vary according to financial need and academic achievement, and may include state, federal and institutional funds. The goal will be to meet the full cost of tuition, fees, room and board, or the student’s full financial need, whichever is less. In addition, recipients receive a one-time Global Studies grant of up to $4,000 to fund a study abroad or Study USA experience.

The Elon Commitment Scholarship

The Elon Commitment Scholarship awards ten scholarships of $25,000 annually to North Carolina students who have promising academic records and high financial need. Other scholarships and grants may be added and may vary according to financial need and academic achievement, and may include state, federal and institutional funds. The goal will be to meet up to the full cost of tuition, fees, room and board, or the student’s full financial need, whichever is less. In addition, recipients receive a one-time Global Study grant of up to $4,000 to fund a study abroad or Study USA experience.

The Honorable Thad Eure North Carolina Achievement Scholarship

This scholarship program at Elon is designed to recognize talented students with financial need from 12 counties in the Piedmont region* of North Carolina and Mr. Eure’s home county, Gates. Three $12,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to incoming first-year students. Students also receive a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to fund a study abroad or Study USA experience.

*Eligible recipients will reside in and be graduating from a high school in one of the following counties: Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Davidson, Durham, Forsyth, Gates, Guilford, Orange, Person, Randolph, Rockingham or Wake counties.

The John L. Georgeo Scholarship

The John L. Georgeo Scholarship awards two $7,500 scholarships annually to incoming first-year students who have significant financial need and exhibit academic promise and exceptional involvement in those areas that most closely reflect the mission and values of an Elon University education. In addition to financial assistance, the John L. Georgeo Scholarship provides a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to fund a study abroad or Study USA experience.

The Gail H. LaRose Scholarship

The Gail H. LaRose Scholarship awards a $25,000 scholarship to an incoming first-year student with demonstrated financial need and who intends to major in elementary education. The scholarship also includes a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to fund a study abroad or Study USA experience. One scholarship is awarded, and it is renewable annually for a total of four years. A new recipient is selected every fourth year and the next anticipated award date is April 2020.

The Mac Mahon Family Scholarship

The Mac Mahon Family Scholarship is designated for students of promise with significant financial need who reside in either Alamance County, North Carolina, or New Jersey, particularly from Hudson and Essex counties and the urban areas of northern New Jersey. One $15,000 award will be made annually. The scholarship also includes a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to fund a study abroad or Study USA experience.

The Margaret Ann Hall Scholarship

The Margaret Ann Hall Scholarship is designated for a worthy female student from Virginia with demonstrated financial need. The scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship and also includes a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to fund a study abroad or Study USA experience. One scholarship is awarded and it is renewable annually for a total of four years. A new recipient is selected every fourth year and the next anticipated award date is April 2021.

The Susan Scholarship

The Susan Scholarship is a need-based scholarship for young women of potential with significant financial need. Four $15,000 scholarships are awarded to incoming first year students annually. In addition, each recipient will be awarded a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to fund a study abroad or Study USA experience.

The Lorraine Fogleman Grant and Muir William Grant Music Scholarship (for students majoring in music performance or music education – audition required)

The L.F. and M.W. Grant Music Scholarship is for students whose high school and standardized test scores indicate a promise of academic success.  The student should also have a record of activities and involvement that indicate leadership and commitment to community.  One $25,000 scholarship is awarded annually and renewable for up to three additional years.  The scholarship also includes a one-time $4,000 Study Abroad Grant to support study abroad or Study USA experience.

The Jessie T. Hook Scholarship

The Jessie T. Hook Scholarship awards two $25,000 scholarships to incoming first year students who have significant financial need and exhibit academic promise and involvement in those areas that closely reflect the mission and values of an Elon education.  In addition, the Jessie T. Hook Scholarship provides a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to fund a study abroad or Study USA experience..  Recipients are selected every four years and the next scheduled selection is April 2020.

The Marvin and Eva Burke Clapp Scholarship

Eva Burke Clapp established the scholarship at Elon in memory of her husband Marvin and in appreciation for what the institution meant to the City of Burlington. She specified that her gift be used to support students with financial need and academic ability. One $25,000 award will be made annually. The scholarship also includes a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to support study abroad or Study USA.

The Edward W. and Joan K. Doherty Odyssey Scholarships

The Edward W. and Joan K. Doherty Odyssey Scholarship awards $25,000 each to two students selected for Elon’s Odyssey Program each year with first preference given to African American and Hispanic students. Mr. Doherty is a member of the Elon University Board of Trustees. The scholarship also includes a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to support study abroad or Study USA.

Anonymous Odyssey Scholarship

The Anonymous Odyssey Scholarship, awarded to students selected for Elon’s Odyssey Program, was established in 2013 by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.  Two $25,000 awards will be made annually. The scholarship also includes a one-time $4,000 Global Study grant to support study abroad or Study USA.

Edna Scholars

Made possible by Elon University benefactor, the late Edna Truitt Noiles ‘44, two Edna Scholars are named annually. Each recipient receives $22,500 in scholarship support. First consideration is given to students who reside or have resided in the Morgan Place/Ballpark Neighborhood of Elon, N.C. Other Alamance County, N.C., students will also be considered. Candidates may pursue any four-year major at Elon.

Horizons National Odyssey Scholarship

The Horizons National Odyssey Scholarship was established by Cindy and Rob Citrone, parents of a 2017 Elon alumna. A $25,000 scholarship supports one student who has completed the Horizons National Pre-K to12 summer program or its successor program.

The Sam and Vicky Hunt Scholarship

The Sam and Vicky Hunt Scholarship supports talented young people who persevere in their educational pursuits despite significant financial and personal adversity. One $25,000 scholarship is available. The next anticipated award date is 2022.

DeJoy-Wos Odyssey Scholarship

Established by the Louis DeJoy and Aldona Wos Family Foundation, the DeJoy-Wos Odyssey Scholarship provides financial support to highly motivated students from Guilford County, N.C., Title One schools. Recipients should demonstrate a strong desire for Elon’s unique brand of high-impact educational experiences within the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. Two $22,500 scholarships awarded annually.

The Inman Family Odyssey Scholarship

William J. and Patricia Inman, parents of a Class of 2000 Elon alumna, established the Inman Family Odyssey Scholarship. Two $25,000 scholarships awarded annually to student pursuing any four-year major at Elon.

Archie and Adelaide Israel Scholarship

The Archie and Adelaide Israel Scholarship supports one student in Elon’s Odyssey Program annually. The award, valued at $22,500, is available to a student pursuing any four-year major at Elon.

The Douglas and Edna Truitt Noiles ’44 Scholarship

The Douglas and Edna Truitt Noiles ’44 Scholarship awards two $25,000 scholarships annually to high achieving students with significant financial need or no family history of college. Preference for these awards is given to students who have completed the Elon Academy, Elon University’s college access program for Alamance-Burlington, N.C. high school students.

Bill and Sue Smith Odyssey Scholarship

The Bill and Sue Smith Odyssey Scholarship, valued at $22,500, is awarded annually to a student pursuing any four-year major at Elon.
