GBL 1870 Preparatory Seminar for Divided Lands: Politics, Borders, and Identities in Bosnia and Cyprus
This course will help prepare students academically, interculturally, and logistically for the corresponding winter-term global experience course. This seminar is offered on campus during the semester previous to the 4sh global engagement experience. Completion of the pre-departure seminar is required for participation in GBL 2870: Divided Lands: Politics, Borders, and Identities in Bosnia and Cyprus.

Course Types

- Describe and explain the similarities and differences between the historical legacies and conflicts (and their causes) in Bosnia and Cyprus
- Analyze how the role of external and international actors and their conflicting interests (e.g. United Nations, European Union, United States, Britain, Turkey, etc.) influenced the conflicts and post-conflict peacebuilding efforts in Bosnia and Cyprus
- Examine and evaluate their own perspective on global and personal responsibility and “intervention” in the face of genocide and human rights abuses in other countries
- Describe and compare the effects of history and war/conflict in Bosnia and Cyprus on contemporary borders and cultural, religious, and political identities
