WHE 2350 Foundations of Physical Activity and Community Health

Physical activity and sedentary behavior are correlated with many prevalent modifiable conditions. Economic, sociological, physiological and political factors influencing both the initiation and maintenance of an active lifestyle will be examined from a personal, national, and global perspective. Health promotion techniques will be used to identify current and future opportunities and challenges to increasing physical activity, thereby mitigating the health threats associated with our modern lifestyle.

  1. 1. Explain the evolution of physical inactivity in the modern lifestyle.
  2. 2. Evaluate physical inactivity as a community health problem from economic and physiologic perspectives.
  3. 3. Use key epidemiological studies of physical activity and mortality/ morbidity to obtain a general knowledge of the strength of association between physical activity/exercise and major chronic diseases.
  4. 4. Apply the current recommendations for physical activity to create a program for a selected demographic group and accurately explain the benefits and limitations of the program.
  5. 5. Analyze physical activity behavior and the impact of environmental, economic, and societal factors in relation to physical activity participation.
  6. 6. Critically examine programs designed to promote physical activity in order to understand effective theories and practices to turn the tide on inactivity locally and globally.
