No graduate credit will be allowed for excess credits completed in an undergraduate classification at any institution. No graduate credit will be allowed for correspondence courses, field-based work, or non-accredited institutions. The last six hours of graduate credit in the program must be taken at Elon.

Academic Probation and Readmission

Graduate candidates are expected to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 throughout the program. Candidates who fail to maintain this cumulative grade point average will be placed on academic probation. Candidates places on probation are required to meet with the Director of the M.Ed. Program to discuss the situation and develop an action plan for improving performance. Graduate candidates who receive a grade of “F” or two grades of “C” for courses in the M.Ed. Program are subject to dismissal from the program.

Graduation and degree requirements

To earn an M.Ed. degree, the graduate candidate must:

  • Have an overall minimum grade point average of 3.0 in graduate coursework
  • Submit an application for graduation to the Coordinator of Graduate Programs in the School of Education;
  • Complete the required courses specified under the graduate core curriculum and major area, Innovation in Education;
  • Complete 33 hours within six calendar years;
  • Complete the Assessment Process throughout the program;
  • Successfully complete the capstone project courses (MED 7800 and MED 7810) and candidate’s project must meet approval by both instructors of record. As a culminating experience, candidates are expected to work collaboratively with colleagues, administrators, families, community partners, and/or others to design and complete a project aimed at developing an equitable and supportive learning environment. Candidates who have not successfully completed the capstone in a timely manner may be given an incomplete grade on the capstone project. In such cases, candidates will not be awarded their degree until the instructor of record for the capstone course provides approval. At that point, candidates who received an Incomplete will be awarded the M.Ed. degree.

Grading Policies

Graduation is dependent upon the quality and completion of course work, as well as evidence of development in professional standards during the 33 hours required to complete the M.Ed. Program. Letter grades are used. They are interpreted in the following table, with the quality points for each hour of credit shown at the right.

Grade Evaluation Quality Points
A Distinguished 4.0
A-  Excellent 3.7
B+  Above Average 3.3
B Average 3.0
B-  Below Average 2.7
C Unsatisfactory 2.0
F Failure 0.0
Incomplete  0.0
WD Medical Withdrawal  0.0
W Withdrawal  0.0
NR No Report  0.0

A “B” is considered average for graduate work. The expectations should be high for graduate students and B’s accordingly should be expected. The M.Ed. program does not give D’s as final grades, as they are not considered passing.

Incomplete Grade Policy

A “I” grade signifies incomplete work because of illness, emergency, extreme hardship, or self-paced courses. It is not given for a candidate missing the final examination unless excused by the M.Ed. Program Director upon communication from the candidate. In any case, an instructor giving the grade of “I” will note the reason for the grade in the “comments” column of the final grade report.

The candidate receiving a grade of “I” completes all work no later than nine class days after mid-semester grades are due in the following regular semester. A final grade is submitted to the Registrar by the instructor by the deadline listed in each year’s academic calendar. After this date, the “I” grade automatically changes to “F” unless an extension is granted by the M.Ed. Program Director.

Grading Scale

The grading scale for candidates enrolled in the M.Ed. Program is defined below:
