Engineers are problem solvers. Through the application of mathematics and science, an engineer may be solving problems dealing with energy, space exploration, environmental issues, product manufacturing, construction or any number of interesting areas of study. Possible engineering disciplines include aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering, materials science engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering and textile engineering. Elon offers two pathways for students interested in pursuing engineering: an engineering degree from Elon or the dual-degree engineering program.

The Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Elon offers students the opportunity to complete their engineering education in a liberal arts university. Students explore a broad set of societal ideas through the Elon Core Curriculum and develop proficiency in mathematics and the sciences. The major also includes a broad study of foundational engineering topics such as mechanics, materials, circuits and options for more specialized topics such as robotics, bioinstrumentation, fluid flow, and energy transformations. Students may further focus their engineering studies at Elon with the Biomedical or Computing concentrations. One key feature of the program are the annual engineering design experiences which expose students to team based creative problem solving in the context of service-learning, prototyping, and scholarly research. Students learn to effectively assess needs, to project design, to prototype, to collaborate, and to evaluate and improve their solutions. The engineering degree from Elon also gives students the flexibility to pair the engineering major with a minor or a second major in a complimentary discipline or area of interest to support their professional interests. Students must complete Elon’s Core Curriculum program requirements and the Elon engineering curriculum requirements.

The dual-degree engineering program at Elon supports students in working toward two degrees: a Bachelor of Science degree from Elon in a complimentary science or math and a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an affiliated engineering university. Elon currently has affiliations with North Carolina State University, Georgia Tech, The Pennsylvania State University, Virginia Tech, Clemson University, University of Notre Dame, Washington University in St. Louis, University of South Carolina, and North Carolina A&T State University. The student will complete three years of education at Elon. These years will include a full array of science, mathematics, computer science and Elon Core Curriculum courses along with their discipline-specific courses. After finishing these three years at Elon and also satisfying the entry requirements of the affiliate engineering university, the student will transfer to the affiliate engineering institution, normally for two additional years. Upon completion of these years of study, the student will receive a Bachelor of Science degree from the engineering school and a Bachelor of Science degree from Elon University in Engineering Physics, Engineering Mathematics, Environmental Science/Environmental Engineering, BioPhysics/Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or Computer Science/Engineering. Students must complete Elon’s Core Curriculum program requirements, the Elon engineering foundations and one of the six dual-degree program options.
