DTS 2015 DEVISING THEATRE

This course teaches different methods of generating new performance works by a group of co-creators. Students as an ensemble will spend most of the semester devising (writing or assembling, directing, and performing) a single full-length theatre production which will be presented at the end of the course. When devising theatre, performance ensembles may have a designated director or playwright in the room or they may not. Devised theatre pieces may have a text or texts that functions as a script in the creative process or they may not. Devised theatre pieces may start with a central story the ensemble wants to tell or a central theme or topic the actors want to explore or they may not. This class will expose students to many forms of theatrical collective creation, in particular Composition Work as outlined by director Anne Bogart.
