EGR 2520 INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

This course will introduce students to the integrated science, engineering, and design concepts of environmental engineering. The course will cover chemical, biological, and geological principles and applications to both natural and engineered environmental systems for water, land, and air.  Laboratory Included.

  1. ● Work successfully and collaboratively on a diverse team to design, solve, and document a realistic environmental engineering problem
  2. ● Perform a basic risk assessment for potentially harmful environmental pollutants
  3. ● Recommend engineering solutions in the form of BMPs for managing stormwater flow and pollutant concentrations
  4. ● Estimate groundwater flow and pollutant dispersal
  5. ● Design the size and parameters of a basic coagulation/flocculation tank, sedimentation basin, softening basin, filtration system, and disinfection system based on water demand
  6. ● Recommend engineering solutions to improve drinking water quality
  7. ● Design the size and parameters of a basic grit chamber, equalization tank, activated sludge system, and stabilization pond
  8. ● Recommend engineering solutions to improve wastewater quality
  9. ● Estimate air pollution emissions, transportation, and deposition using measurements and modeling
  10. ● Recommend engineering solutions to reduce emissions of air pollutants based on type, source, concentration, cost, and end goal
  11. ● Design the size and parameters of a basic landfill and composting operation, including mixing, gas production, and leachate
  12. ● Recommend sustainable solutions to enhance the built environment including accessibility, heat loss/retention, stormwater management, materials flow, and presentation
  13. ● Perform a comparative life cycle assessment
