ACC 6400 Research and Communications for Accounting Professionals

Study of the tax and accounting practice environments including the Treasury Department, the Courts, and the legislative history of the Internal Revenue Code. The course includes library training in the use of computer tax services, such as CCH Research Network (IntelliConnect) in performing tax research and the generally accepted accounting standards for accounting research. Research and communication methodologies for solving tax and accounting problem cases are studied.

Course Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to employ state-of-the-art tax research tools in the accounting and tax research process.
  2. Students will be able to research complex accounting and tax questions and communicate the results of this research both in writing and orally.
  3. Students will be able to communicate with regulatory bodies using appropriate methods, specifically correspondence and protest letters.
  4. Students will be able to explain the audit and appeals process.
  5. Students will be able to utilize fundamental tax planning strategies to advise clients.
  6. Students will be able to locate and communicate answers to financial accounting questions using the Financial Accounting Research System database
