Coaching Minor

The coaching minor curriculum provides students the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills to create and facilitate a safe and optimal athletic environment that develops the whole athlete.  The minor is for any student interested in youth sports, community recreation leagues, scholastic sport (elementary through high school) and/or intercollegiate athletics.

  • Up to four independent research credits (4999) can be counted toward the accumulation of the 8 sh, but must be preapproved by the coaching minor program coordinator. 
  • Two to four internship credits of PEH 4985, SPT 3985, or ESS 4985 may be counted toward the accumulation of the 8 sh, but must be preapproved by the coaching minor program coordinator.

 

Program Outcomes

Students will articulate an athlete-centered philosophy that fosters growth and development of the whole athlete.

Students will describe the importance of character education and how to incorporate it in sport.

Students will describe how to use evidence-based knowledge when planning safe, effective training strategies.

Students will apply knowledge of developmental influences, technical skills, tactical skills, and effective instructional strategies when planning and teaching.
