CAE 1110 TRANSITION STRATEGIES FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

The purpose of this course is to help new high school graduates transition successfully to college by introducing key components of an undergraduate education. The course will focus on a common reading, career exploration, and connecting students to campus resources. Topics will include skills and behaviors essential for success: technology, research, writing, and wellness. Personal reflection and exploration, as well as major and career exploration will be discussed. This course is limited to first year students prior to their first fall semester in college.

  1. • Identify and demonstrate understanding of Elon University’s academic and social expectations.
    • Articulate the purpose of the Elon Honor code and its significance to maintaining a vibrant community.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in using basic technological applications necessary for success at Elon.
    • Identify and utilize various campus resources to support the Elon college experience including, but not limited to: the library, SPDC, TLT, professors, tutoring and writing centers, and Academic Support for Athletics.
    • Demonstrate the research and writing process and practice the appropriate structure and style of writing for specific audiences.
    • Understand the consequences of specific behaviors, including the effects on academic and athletic performance.
    • Assess individual strengths and learn how they may inform decision-making regarding majors and careers.
    • Understand networking and begin building a network within the Elon community.
    • Think critically about the costs of attending Elon and evaluate how personal decisions effect personal finances and the ability to budget money.
