HCM 4970 SENIOR SEMINAR IN HEALTH COMMUNICATIONS

This course addresses current issues in health communications. Students will examine an intercultural health or healthcare problem in depth and explore how the social marketing process influences behavior change. They will develop research, evaluation, and professional health communication skills and propose creative, evidence-based solutions to the problem. Topics may vary. Prerequisite: COM 3370.

  1. Understand and describe critical issues related to a specific health or healthcare problem.
  2. Assess the role of policy, ethics, and persuasion in solving domestic and/or global health or healthcare problems through communication.
  3. Apply the social marketing process to set strategic behavior change goals and objectives.
  4. Explain the symbiotic relationship between health communicators and other professionals including public health officials, healthcare providers, scientists, and media professionals.
  5. Evaluate and construct intercultural communication solutions to improve the health literacy and media literacy of diverse audiences.
  6. Apply research and analytical skills to develop and assess effective health messages.
  7. Demonstrate professional written and oral communications skills.
