NRS 3400 MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES IN MENTAL HEALTH

This course will explore the essential elements of nursing care across the mental-health care continuum. Emphasis is placed on the concepts of therapeutic communication, health-wellness-illness, medication and therapeutic caring interventions. Students will also explore the concepts of family, management of care, safety, quality improvement, informatics/technology and advocacy.

  1. 1. Perform head to toe and focused assessments of the client with an alteration in mental health.
  2. 2. Demonstrate satisfactory competence in clinical skills per the NRS 340 Clinical Evaluation Tool.
  3. 3. Identify needs of clients and families within this client population and apply components of the nursing process to develop a plan of care to meet those needs.
  4. 4. Detect changes within the internal and external environment of clients across the mental health care continuum.
  5. 5. Communicate effectively with individuals, support persons and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  6. 6. Correlate diagnostic test and procedures across the health-wellness-illness continuum.
  7. 7. Analyze the role of medication regimens in the mental-health client and its impact on health-wellness-illness.
  8. 8. Incorporate informatics and technology to formulate evidenced-based clinical judgements and decisions.
  9. 9. Recognize the processes of clinical reasoning and applications in nursing practice.
  10. 10. Provide care in regard to policy and regulations, cost effective strategies, quality improvement processes and safety.
  11. 11. Implement caring interventions incorporating documented best practices for individuals in diverse mental health settings.
  12. 12. Provide safe, culturally competent therapeutic care to clients.
