PHY 1040 INTRODUCTION TO OCEANOGRAPHY

This course will introduce students to the fascinating and often mysterious marine world that covers 71% of the Earth's surface and yet is more poorly mapped than the surface of the Moon. The course will examine the creation, structure, composition, motion and inhabitants of our oceans. Studies will explore the wonders, mysteries and interactions between the ocean, atmosphere and climate as well as the charm, fascination, and dangers of our shorelines. The uses of this enormous natural resource will be discussed as will its misuses. Interest and time permitting, a weekend visit to our local ocean is planned.
