SPN 4560 ¿YA LLEGAMOS? SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IN SPANISH

What factors influence students’ success in second language learning? How important are individual differences like motivation, musical ability, and social networks? Is study abroad really the best way to become fluent? How effective are phone applications as tools for learning a second language? This course explores the myths and realities of adult second language learning with a special focus on Spanish and English. In addition to providing students with a context for understanding their own strengths and weaknesses as learners, we will examine key theories and principles in the field of language acquisition, the brain science behind it, and how learners can increase their ultimate attainment regardless of their current level. Taught in Spanish.

  1. 1. Students will achieve advanced communicative competency in the target language (advanced-mid in reading and writing, advanced-low in speaking and listening)
  2. 2. Students will achieve advanced intercultural competency. (Student demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of and ability to ask complex questions about cultural perspectives revealed by differences in communication: grammar, vocabulary, syntax, nonverbal. Is able to manage appropriately some cultural conventions within a variety of contexts.)
  3. 3. Students will become critical, analytical thinkers and problem solvers in the target language (by conducting in-depth research in the target language, following field-appropriate disciplinary standards, critically considering the issue being researched, using credible and relevant sources to develop a sophisticated analysis).
