Practicum and Internship Information

Prior to taking HSS 3980 Practicum: Theory and Practice of Human Service Studies or HSS 3981 Practicum Away: Theory and Practice of Human Service Studies, students must be approved by the Human Service Studies department. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.1 is required to be eligible for practicum.

Most of the other major requirements must be completed prior to taking HSS 4985. Students who enroll in HSS 4985 may not take any courses other than the prescribed block courses. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.2 is required to be eligible for internship. Applications for both practicum and internship must be completed by the spring semester prior to registration in order to enroll in these courses the following year. Applications are available online through a link on the Human Service Studies website.

Program Outcomes

Students will select a significant social problem and demonstrate their understanding of this problem and related or evidence based and knowledge informed interventions.

Students will identify the history, development, and ideological perspective of public social policies.

Students will demonstrate their ability to think critically, logically, and creatively.

Students understand community context and will recognize agency, community, and/or societal changes that would improve the lives of the clients they serve.

Students will identify current research that is relevant to the internship site and discuss its potential applications to their work.

Students will demonstrate an awareness of self and sensitivity to human diversity of all kinds, including racial, ethnic, age-related, and sexual orientation.

Students will demonstrate ethical decision-making ability.

Students will demonstrate the ability to accurately and meaningfully apply theoretical and empirical information to guide their work.
