A Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Applied Mathematics requires the completion of the Elon Core Curriculum as well as the Major Requirements listed below.
A Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Applied Mathematics requires the following courses: 32 sh
One course selected from: 4 sh
Note: a student is not allowed to count both MTH 2410 and MTH 3300 toward the major.
Two courses selected from: 8 sh
At least one course must be 4000-level.
Two 3000/4000 MTH classes (excluding MTH 3080 and 3090), or a sequence of two courses from an allied field approved by the mathematics department: 8 sh
A related experiential/capstone experience approved by the department: 4 sh
*The electives and the related course from outside of mathematics are expected to form a cohesive plan and must be approved by the mathematics and statistics department.
Total Credit Hours: 56
A student may be exempt from STS 1100 and/or MTH 1510 by demonstrating proficiency.
Once a student has received credit, including transfer credit for a course, credit may not be received for any course with material that is equivalent to it or is a prerequisite for it without permission of the mathematics department.
All graduating mathematics majors are required to complete a senior portfolio of their work. This portfolio will include a compilation of their work across their four years of mathematical study at Elon; therefore, students should be mindful of this requirement as they complete work for all their courses and be sure to retain electronic copies of work that they may want to include in their portfolio in their senior year.
