ENS 2000 SOPHOMORE SEMINAR: ENVIRONMENTAL INQUIRY

This course consists of in-depth examination of different ways of thinking about and studying the environment, with a primary emphasis on conducting scholarly work within an interdisciplinary framework. Topics include: researching and writing literature reviews; qualitative and quantitative research methods used in natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities; basic empirical design and statistical methods; stakeholder analysis; and analysis of value systems.

This course is designed for Environmental Studies and Environmental and Ecological Sciences majors, but may be useful for other students.

Course Outcomes

  1. Synthesize research through writing effective literature reviews.
  2. Explore a range of modes of inquiry and identify strengths and limitations of those different modes.
  3. Learn and apply basic concepts of statistical literacy in ecology and environmental studies.
  4. Examine the role of ethics and value systems in environmental projects.
  5. Identify and practice a variety of professional skills related to environmental projects, including data management, stakeholder identification, and project management.
