Appointment
The Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) is a faculty member appointed by the President and independent of the Division of Athletics.
Responsibilities
The FAR serves as the liaison between the Division of Athletics and and Division of Academic Affairs and is recognized as the representative of the institution and its faculty in the relationship between the Nation Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the local campus.
The duties and involvement of the FAR may include:
Monitor the academic integrity of the Athletic Department
Monitor the academic performance of Student-Athletes
Ensure academic services are available to Student-Athletes
Collaborate with Faculty Athletics Committee
Review and/or approve NCAA waivers
Process NCAA certification of eligibility
Assist the student-athlete with Institutional scholarship appeals
Serve as a resource for coaches (e.g., recruiting)
Collaborate with Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
Work with Director of Academic Support and Senior Athletics Administration on academic related projects
Work with the Colonial Athletics Association (CAA) conference
Attend Conference FAR Meetings
Work with the CAA Academic Alliance
Review and vote on CAA Scholar-Athlete Awards
Represents Elon on CAA and NCAA committees when appointed
Assist NCAA with survey administration
Serve as a liaison on issues between a faculty member and athletics
Assist with missed class time / excused absence policy
Helps interpret institutional academic policies (e.g., honor code)
Assist with finding/coordinating support for health & well-being matters
Communicate with the academic support personnel, Division of Athletics, or other institutional departments as needed to ensure student-athletes are receiving the proper assistance and/or support from the institution.
