CHN3220 Advanced Chinese II
The course builds students' linguistic skills by expanding their repertoire of words and structures used in discussing complex topics. The course introduces issues faced by Chinese or Chinese American individuals in the changing era, including health and wellness, environmental protection, gender equality, Chinatown, and money management and investment. Supplementary materials, such as articles, movies, and field trips, help students gain an understanding of the topics under discussion from different perspectives and develop their critical thinking skills. Additionally, students acquire skills in developing arguments by utilizing basic argument structures through oral presentations and a term project. A significant amount of preparation is expected. The proficiency goal on the ACTFL scale is Intermediate High to Advanced Low in reading and writing; Intermediate High in listening and speaking.
Prerequisite
CHN 3210, placement at this level, or permission from the instructor.

Learning Outcomes
- 1. Students are expected to achieve Intermediate High to Advanced Low proficiency level in reading and writing and Intermediate High in listening and speaking.
- 2. Students are expected to achieve advanced intercultural competency. (Students possess awareness and knowledge of societal and global issues and are able to explain the causes from the social-economical and cultural perspectives.)
- 3. Students are expected to become critical thinkers and problem solvers in the target language through in-class discussions and oral presentations building their critical thinking, as well as a term project analyzing the causes of a societal problem and proposing solutions.
