ENS1060 Environmental Science In The Movies

This course examines and critiques the environmental science content of some popular movies. While many movies utilize science concepts to develop the plot, students will consider the validity and representation of environmental science concepts and then look deeper at those principles as they apply to the world around us. Students will also consider how they use their understanding of environmental science in their lives, and how they evaluate the validity of what they see in the popular media.

  1. Include an understanding of the following concepts:
    How scientific method and techniques are used to study the environment, and apply critical
    thinking to the interpretation of scientific data.
  2. Energy flow and nutrient cycling through ecosystems and food webs, what effects changes have
    on these systems, and how all components of the biosphere are inextricably linked.
  3. To gain a basic knowledge of plant and animal species of our community.
  4. How man-made and natural changes in the environment can cause long term consequences for the
    future.
  5. The causes and results of climate change, water crisis, air and soil quality and how they are
    affecting ecosystems, plant and animal communities, and biomes.
  6. How scientists are studying environmental issues and how they are working towards possible
    solutions.
