GER3130 Understanding Germany through Film

Film has long been among Germany’s most significant cultural products, reflecting and shaping German society. In this course, we will discuss individual films in terms of their aesthetic qualities and cultural and historical significance. Social history, politics, cultural representation, self-expression, and artistic creation are some of the topics we will consider. Offered: 3000-level German courses are offered in rotation, one per semester.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Language. Understand main ideas conveyed in written and spoken German on concrete and abstract topics, even when complex language is used. Produce written and spoken German that is complex, fluent, and accurate.
  2. Cultural and intercultural competency. Describe elements of culture, cultural rules, and beliefs & values that reflect and shape today’s Germany. Understand the genre of horror and its conventions and history, especially in the German context. Explain background information necessary for critical analysis of individual works and their cultural contexts.
  3. Critical thinking. Analyze cultural elements and cultural values. Identify biases in German culture and your home culture. Explain your position and weigh options. Connect and apply these abilities to real-world situations. Using tools of film analysis, and relying on film criticism related to horror, explore your own critical views on film.
