Recording Video and Audio, Streaming Video and Audio, or Photography in Classes
Elon University students should be honest, trustworthy, fair, ethical, and respectful in all they do. As noted in the Student Handbook, the recording (video and/or audio), streaming (video and/or audio), or photographing (camera and video phones included) of students, faculty, or staff without their express consent is inconsistent with these values.
Students are responsible for knowing the regulations related to recording, streaming, or photographing during classes. Students must obtain instructor permission to record/stream video or audio or take photos in the classroom as described in a statement in the class syllabus or be a student with a disability who has been granted an accommodation for recording through the Office of Academic Accommodations and Accessibility (AAA). Students with a recording accommodation will be required to sign a recording agreement each term that outlines all responsibilities and restrictions regarding recording.
If a student records, streams, or takes photographs in a class without the instructor’s permission or without an appropriate accommodation granted through AAA, such action will be reported to the Office of Student Conduct for investigation and sanctioning in line with established University policy.
Even for courses where the instructor allows recording of the class as indicated in the syllabus, recorded classes may not be used in any way that denigrates and/or decontextualizes the instructor or any student whose class remarks are recorded. In addition, recordings of class sessions may not be distributed, posted, published, or quoted without the express consent of the instructor or speaker, and if permission is granted, must be properly cited. All recordings of class lectures or discussions must be erased at the end of the course. Actions inconsistent with this policy may constitute violations of the Student Code of Conduct and will be addressed as appropriate.
