ART 2010 Introduction to Drawing

Engage drawing as both a method of seeing and a way of thinking. This course introduces foundational principles of line, value, composition, proportion, and spatial representation through observational and exploratory approaches. Working with traditional and contemporary materials, students build technical fluency, strengthen perceptual awareness, and gain confidence in communicating ideas through drawing. The course emphasizes careful observation, experimentation, and revision as students learn to translate what they see and imagine into clear visual form.

Course Outcomes

1. Demonstrate observational drawing skills using a range of techniques and materials, including graphite, charcoal, ink, and color media.
2. Apply core drawing principles—line, value, composition, proportion, and spatial representation—in both representational and exploratory drawings.
3. Use drawing intentionally to communicate ideas, experiences, and visual observations.
4. Participate in critique and discussion, reflecting critically on their own work and the work of others.
5. Conduct visual research by examining historical and contemporary drawings and relating these examples to their own studio practice.
