This course is designed to provide a detailed working knowledge of how neurons function at the cellular level. We will consider neurons as electrochemically based information-processing cells, in isolation and as part of simple neural circuits. The general principles of cellular neurophysiology common to all neurons will be addressed, emphasizing non-human animals. Examples from pathophysiology, neuropharmacology, and toxicology will be considered. We will also review the sensory systems of human and non-human organisms. This course will not cover human cognition, emotional regulation, or large-scale organization. Basic knowledge of cell biology (at the level of /bio-1112'>BIO 1112 or /bio-2412'>BIO 2412) is required, including the following topics: subcellular organelles, membrane structure and the fluid mosaic model, the central dogma, and protein structure.
