CHM 1130 General Chemistry I and II Lab

The laboratory experience in General Chemistry gives you an opportunity to observe and apply concepts and principles discussed in lecture. Laboratory experiences are a critical part of any facet of science education. As you perform experiments, think critically about what is really going on at the molecular level and use this experience as an opportunity to solidify your grasp of chemical concepts.

This one-semester laboratory course is an innovative alternative to the traditional two-semester General Chemistry lab sequence. Designed to complement the foundational topics of General Chemistry I (/chm-1110'>CHM 1110) and II (/chm-1120'>CHM 1120), the lab covers essential concepts such as stoichiometry, acid-base chemistry, solubility, thermodynamics, equilibrium, kinetics, electrochemistry, and spectroscopy.

This course offers a more focused, immersive, and engaging laboratory experience through a streamlined, inquiry-based approach. Students will engage deeply with experimental design and data analysis, gaining hands-on experience with a wide range of modern techniques and instrumentation. By emphasizing scientific thinking and problem-solving over rote procedure, this course equips students with stronger experimental skills and a more meaningful understanding of chemistry in practice, all within a single semester.

Each week students will meet for 4 hours of hands-on experimentation.
