COR 4190 Los Angeles: City of Dreams and Visions, City of Entrepreneurs and Invention
For centuries, Los Angeles has attracted dreamers and entrepreneurs, drawn by promises of paradise, visions of wealth and power, and the chance to shape a new future. Today, L.A. is both the nation’s most important city for international trade—anchored by the largest port complex in the Western Hemisphere—and a global media capital whose influence spans film, television, music, high tech, and digital entertainment. Waves of immigrants, from the Great Migration of African Americans to Latin American and Asian communities, have created one of the world’s most diverse and dynamic urban cultures. Its constant sunshine, access to the ocean, outdoor spaces, and openness to new ideas have made Los Angeles a focal point for progressive thinking and innovation, as well as a hub for fitness, fashion, and wellness culture. Through weekly visits to key sites, readings, and projects, this multidisciplinary, location-based course examines how visionaries and innovators have transformed Los Angeles, and how the cycle of invention and reinvention continues to shape the city's commerce, creativity, and cultural diversity. Open to students in their third or fourth year of study. This course is writing intensive.
