ECO 3300 Applied Econometrics

Economists use data analysis to examine and understand the world. In this course, you will learn to apply advanced linear regression methods to answer real-world questions related to the practice of economics and business. Through an authentic course-based research project, you will gain valuable experience preparing data, applying appropriate methods, making logical inferences, and communicating the results of your research. In the process, you will develop important programming skills needed to carry out applied data analysis.


The course explores the problems that arise when estimating economic relationships and how these challenges affect statistical inference. Students will learn to identify appropriate methods for analyzing economic data, interpret the results of those analyses, and understand the limitations of different estimation methods. Topics include data transformation, measurement error, simultaneous equations, time series, panel data methods, policy analysis, and limited dependent variables.

ECO 1000; ECO 2300 or STS 2120; and MTH 1160, MTH 1510, or higher; at least one ECO course at the 3000 level (may be taken as a co-requisite); or permission of instructor.

Course Outcomes
