EGR 2210 Engineering Design for Service
Engineering professionals are committed to serving the needs of others and considering the well-being of those whom they serve. Students will work in small teams to apply the engineering design process to design devices or systems to aid a client in the local community. The clients will be identified through community partnerships with local non-profit organizations. The team project work is enhanced with lectures, readings, and/or class discussions on formal engineering design techniques, human-centered design, teamwork, community engagement, ethical and social responsibility, and oral and written communication. Selected projects may be continued as undergraduate research.

Course Outcomes
- Relate the design-thinking process to the engineering design process.
- Practice an integrated design-thinking process and engineering design process to develop and construct a device, system, or process to meet the need(s) of a community partner.
- Generate a robust set of potential ways to address the need(s) of a community partner.
- Integrate prototyping tools, techniques, and instruments to build something that works to meet user requirements.
- Create quantitative system specifications and test measurement plans to demonstrate that a design meets user requirements.
- Operate on a diverse team with members with a variety of learning, personality, and work styles.
- Cite and capitalize on both personal and team strengths to achieve design goals.
- Critically evaluate the work completed by self and others by identifying the strengths and areas for improvement.
- Evaluate engineering analysis work and design artifacts within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, and manufacturability.
- Adapt communication, written and oral, to address diverse audiences.
