What is Taiwanese identity? Located in East Asia, Taiwan is an island that has occupied a unique position in history. The island’s early interactions with former European empires, tense relations with China, thriving democracy, and diverse cultural representation from indigenous communities, Han settlers, and immigrants from Southeast Asia and China offer us a multifaceted and interdisciplinary experience to study about Taiwanese identity. This course explores the previous question through three main Taiwanese areas of focus: history, gastronomy, and art. During our visit in Taiwan, we will engage with these complexities through historical sites, culinary experiences, and art performances and/or exhibits. Assessment for the program includes daily journal entries, where you will document your observations and reflections, and a creative project on a specific topic related to Taiwan’s history, culture, or art. This final report will also include a comparative reflection with life in the United States and can be presented as a website, podcast, or video report.
