JPN 1010 Elementary Japanese I

This course is designed for students who have never studied Japanese or who have had very little exposure to the language. Students will develop listening, speaking and basic writing skills while learning basic conversational skills. Authentic materials like manga and anime will be used to enhance cultural competence, and students will learn Hiragana, Katakana, and will master 30 Kanji. By the end of the semester, students will be able to write short paragraphs about daily life in Japanese. Proficiency goal on the ACTFL scale: Novice Mid.

Course Outcomes

1. SLO 1. Students will exhibit proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking at the novice-mid level.
2. SLO 2A. Students will begin to demonstrate awareness of another culture’s history, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices.
   
   SLO 2.B Students will begin to demonstrate awareness of how another culture’s perspectives are shaped by that culture’s history, politics, communication styles, economy, beliefs and practices.
   
   SLO 2C: Students will begin to demonstrate awareness that cultural rules and biases exist in the target culture (C2) and home culture (C1). Students will express some openness to cultural difference, but typically responds with own worldview.
   
   SLO 2D: Students will provide examples of ways in which communicative structures such as grammar, syntax, or lexicon differ between TL and native language. Students will explain why those examples have to be understood on their own terms, rather than as the other of English.
3. SLO 3A: With thorough guidance students will conduct basic research on a given topic, identifying some core issues.
   
   SLO 3B: Students will demonstrate rudimentary understanding of the issue/problem being researched. With guidance, students will begin to acknowledge and critically consider different sides of an issue and use appropriate and relevant content to develop simple ideas.
   
   SLO 3C: Students will identify and use credible and relevant source(s) with some interpretation /evaluation, though not enough to develop a coherent analysis or synthesis. Students will take experts’ viewpoints as mostly fact, with little questioning.
   
   SLO 3D: With thorough guidance, students will acknowledge connections that exist between this course and courses outside the discipline.
