LED 3100 Leadership: Theory, Practice, and Personal Development
This course explores major theories and approaches to leadership, with an emphasis on personal reflection and interdisciplinary application across various contexts, including social, political, economic, and global. Students will examine scholarly research in the discipline of leadership studies, critically examine the theoretical nature of leadership, identify their leadership orientations, and create personal leadership development plans. The dynamics of leadership and followership will be explored, along with the intersection of leadership theory and ethics, gender, culture, identity, human difference, diversity, and change.
- 1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of historical and contemporary theories of leadership.
- 2. Analyze the discipline of leadership from multiple perspectives and understand leadership for group and community development, organizational effectiveness, ethics, and social responsibility.
- 3. Investigate scholarly research to develop complex understandings of leadership and followership across disciplines; and develop specialized knowledge, skills, and dispositions to enhance scholarly pursuits.
- 4. Reflect on and apply theories of leadership to practical situations for increased self-awareness and improved practice.
- 5. Explore the nuances of power and influence, as components of the leadership process.
- 6. Critique and analyze their own roles and philosophies of leadership comparatively based on an understanding of the major theoretical leadership approaches.
- 7. Synthesize the knowledge and experiences gained from the course to continue developing leadership competencies.
