MTH 1005 Precalculus

Students will develop a mastery of the mathematical foundation necessary for success in calculus. Topics include algebraic concepts such as expressions and equations; functional concepts such as graphs, domain, range, and composition; polynomials; exponential and logarithmic functions; and trigonometry.

This course is by permission from Mathematics and Statistics department only. Elective credit only. Does not count as a non-lab science. No credit for students with /mth-1510'>MTH 1510 credit or its exemption.

  1. Students will develop the mathematical foundation necessary for success in calculus.
  2. Students will be able to manipulate algebraic and rational expressions and develop and solve algebraic equations.
  3. Students will be able to analyze a broad range of functions both algebraically and graphically.
  4. Students will be able to describe (both graphically and algebraically) fundamental properties of lines, quadratic functions, cubic functions, and rational functions.
  5. Students will be able to describe (both graphically and algebraically) fundamental properties of the exponential and natural logarithmic functions, be able to use laws of logarithms to solve problems, and be able to solve exponential equations.
  6. Students will be able to describe (both graphically and algebraically) the fundamental properties of basic the trigonometric functions, create the graphs and inverses of the sine, cosine, and tangent functions, use right triangle trigonometry to determine information about right triangles, evaluate the sine, cosine, and tangent functions at standard reference angles, and use the Pythagorean Identity.
