MUS 2815 Critical Listening

This course covers basic principles of physical acoustics, psychology of sound, aesthetics of sound with a critical listening study of music and sound. The course includes activities and exercises designed to develop the student's ability to define and evaluate aesthetic elements of live and recorded music.

Course Outcomes

1. Students will explain basic acoustic principles of listening environments.
2. Students will analyze psychological principles related to the effects of sound.
3. Students will identify and assess width and depth in recorded music.
4. Students will identify and assess common instruments by timbre and range.
5. Students will identify and differentiate the frequency ranges of instruments in recorded music.
6. Students will process successful frequency equalization techniques to recorded music.
7. Students will identify and analyze music production techniques involving panning, reverb, delay, distortion, compression, and effects.
8. Students will compare and contrast different mixing styles and techniques.
9. Students will identify and differentiate common chord progressions in commercial music.
