MUS 3875 The Art of Mixing
This course develops advanced listening, analytical and mixing skills. Coursework will include analysis of musical styles and mix practices for various genres, with the goal of emulating successful, professional commercial mixes. Students will find their creative voice through defining their own creative approach to mixing.

Course Outcomes
- Students will be able to critically analyze and distinguish between various elements in complex music production including subtle differences in frequency distribution, panning, balance, dynamics, audio effects, and sound quality.
- Students will be able to prepare tracks for mixing; this includes editing, comp’ing, tuning, and organizing sessions.
- Students will acquire skills to apply appropriate mixing techniques for various music genres, understanding the unique considerations and approaches for each.
- Students will gain hands-on experience with advanced mixing software and hardware, improving their technical skills and understanding of the analog and digital audio workstation environment.
- Students will be able to make informed creative decisions regarding the balance, panning, EQ, dynamics, and effects in their mixes, contributing to a polished and professional sound.
- Students will be able to prepare deliverables, understanding industry-level standards for submitting polished, final mixes.
- Students will create a portfolio of mixed tracks across various genres, demonstrating their advanced listening, analytical, and mixing skills, ready for professional review.
