PHL 3420 Health and Social Justice
This course acquaints students with ethical issues in medicine, health care, and research with attention to issues of race, gender, and disability, and to questions of bodily difference. We will contextualize bioethics with the history of biopolitics, understanding practices of healthcare as exercises of both knowledge—finding answers, saving lives—and power—e.g. distribution of resources, distinctions of “abnormal” from “normal,” and the meaning of a life worth living. During the semester, we will have the privilege to learn from local scholars and organizers on these issues in our region, both in and out of the classroom.

- engaging directly with local activist and community health efforts around issues of concern / interest
- learning about the activist history of zines and creating a zine
- writing a paper and shorter writing assignments, as well as completing final project
