PSY 2820 Psychology Life Hacks

Psychology is the science of people, the scientific study of the mind and behavior, and thus the study of how people think, act, and feel. Therefore, much of the research of psychology applies to how we live, learn, interact, and experience our everyday lives. Students will learn about, apply, and analyze evidence-based psychological principles in real life situations. Topics will include habit formation, memory tools, navigating social situations, and de-stressing.

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply habit formation science from a behavioral and cognitive perspective through the design, implementation, and tracking of a habit formation plan for 2 positive habits they would like to form.
  2. Students will utilize data as a tool to understand and evaluate behavior change.
  3. Students demonstrate consultation skills with and for peers and with faculty to evaluate progress and make informed modifications.
  4. Students will demonstrate the ability to read, write and speak using the language of clinical case reporting, scholarly writing, and professional presentations.
  5. Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills through reading, written reflection, discussion, and the practice of a range of evidence-based techniques such as:
    - Cognitive restructuring and ACT-based skills for managing challenging thoughts and emotions
    - Cognitive and behavioral strategies for learning, studying, organization and time management
    - Cognitive-based memory strategies
    - Mindfulness skills
    - Interpersonal skills that balance effective communication, maintaining relationships, and asserting needs
    - Interpersonal problem solving
    - Communication in hostile or otherwise difficult interpersonal situations
    - Both physiologically-based and mentally based stress-reduction and relaxation skills
  6. Students will curate knowledge about the applicability of these techniques in other populations and utilization in settings such as therapy/counseling, classrooms, business settings, homes, and communities.
