REL 3450 Religion and Reproduction

Religion plays a large role in shaping reproductive practices, norms, ethics, and policies. This course explores the intersection of religion and reproduction in the United States with a particular focus on the role of Christianity in shaping cultural attitudes and public policy.

2. evaluate and critically discuss how religious history and teachings have shaped public attitudes about race and gender, with particular attention to reproduction
3. critically analyze how religion influences discussion of gender and reproduction in political discourse
4. demonstrate a critical understanding of the socially constructed nature of what is categorized as “religious”
5. produce nuanced reflection about the interaction of two or more religious traditions and communities in relation to reproduction
